Earlier this Summer, we produced a short spot for the Virginia is for Film Lovers video contest. There were a ton of great entries and we’re happy to announced that we walked away with one of the Jury Film awards!
The goal of the video was to entice visitors and residents to get out and explore our beautiful state. The idea behind the video started with the tagline “Have a Little Adventure – Visit Virginia,” with the key word of course being little. One of the best things about living in Virginia is that you can have a lot of different adventures without ever having to go too far. It doesn’t have to be a big extravagant trip. If you just want to get away for a day, this is the place for you. In one day, you can watch the sunrise on the beach, eat some delicious food in Richmond, and then take a hike in the Blue Ridge Mountains and watch the sun set again – all that with only four hours of driving in between.
To get the miniature look, we shot everything from high angles (either by drone or from high vantage points) and added the tilt-shift look in post. Using Adobe After Effects, we used a combination of masks, mattes and the Camera Lens Blur plugin to get the effect we needed. Camera Lens Blur does a great job of replicating real lens blur, even allowing you to choose how many iris blades you want on your virtual lens. The bokeh (circles in the blurry sections) in the image above was all created in post using this method.
