Blissfully unaware that a global pandemic was on the way, we excitedly planned our escape to Iceland for May 2020. Covid had other plans so, like most others, we ended up spending that time on our patio instead. Fast-forward to October 2021 when our flight tracker alerted us to insanely low flight prices. Fully-vaccinated and stir-crazy, we bought tickets, jumped on a plane and landed in awe-inspiring Iceland just days later.
Our first day was a whirlwind. What we planned as a laidback day – arrive, Blue Lagoon, hotel, sleep – became our most eventful day by far. As we were promised, Blue Lagoon worked its magic to push away the jet-lag so we were able to explore on our drive to our Vik hotel. In our first day alone we saw a volcano and walked along the hardened (but still steaming) lava, stood under a roaring waterfall and witnessed the aurora borealis. Iceland always found a way to keep us engaged even though we hadn’t slept in 36 hours.
We’ve been able to explore some amazing places but Iceland quickly rose to the top. We will undoubtedly be going back.
